Happy Star Wars Day, fellow geeks! As I always write a special post for this day, I started brainstorming what I could do this year a couple of days ago. I've covered a lot of stuff, from favourite scenes to how to spend this Fourth of May in a Star Warsy way. This year, I thought it would be fun to put together a questionnaire, giving you an idea of what I myself love most about this Galaxy Far, Far Away, and hoping to involve all of you who love Star Wars, too, in this yearly blog post. Ready? Let's jump to light speed!
WHEN DID YOU FIRST SEE A STAR WARS FILM AND WHY DID YOU LOVE IT?
I was pretty young when I saw the original trilogy, although I really can't remember how young. The only thing I do remember is that us kids were pretty curious about the black masked dude on my dad's videos. Being a big fan himself - I've heard tell of a London premiere, that lucky bastard - my Dad was more than happy to introduce us to it, and I think it's safe to say that since that moment we were pretty much lost to the Star Wars Universe. I had never seen anything like it. Those space battles! The frickin' lightsabers! A tough, badass Princess! I'd hit the motherload.
YOUR FAVOURITE FILM
Now, I'll first acknowledge the fact that I do believe The Empire Strikes Back is the best film of them all on so many levels. But my favourite? A New Hope. I just think it symbolises the start of it for me. I love the introduction to all of the characters, the very first time they appeared on my screen, that Binary Sunset scene... All of that wins, hands down.
YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER(S)
Picking your favourite Star Wars character is like picking your own favourite child, so I'm not even going to try and just sum up ALL of my favourite characters. There the inevitable Han Solo crush, the awesomeness that is Obi-Wan Kenobi and my immediate adoration for pilot Wedge Antilles when it comes to the original trilogy. Then came the prequels (yes, we do need to talk about those, there's no way around it) and the new films, wherein my love for Obi-Wan Kenobi only grew (totally Ewan McGregor's merit) and my fascination with rebel pilots just reached its peak with the appearance of Poe Dameron (or DamNeron, am I right?). As I grew older, I started appreciating Luke's character arch a lot more, and most importantly: I realised just how important Princess Leia was for me, and still is.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE IN THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE?
Or if you could have a cameo in one of the future films, what would you most like to play? There was a brief time period in which a tiny Nelle would have said: I wanna be a Jedi! But that quickly changed to Rebel Pilot. My life would totally be complete if I could only wear that orange suit and pretend-fly an X-Wing one time. Make me a part of Red Squadron and I'd die happily on the spot, I'm sure.
I don't have a lot of Star Wars memorabilia, mostly because all the toys we owned as kids were considered general property of all three of us, or to be frank: were given to my brother. They're still at home, but man, I would love to have one of those Millennium Falcon replicas for myself. I do have a favourite Star Wars shirt, however, and there was no way I'd throw that Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure in with the rest. To name one other thing: last year I got myself a graphic novel version of the original trilogy in London. Best Forbidden Planet buy ever.
ONE GOOD THING ABOUT THE PREQUELS.
Let me be girly here, and say: Padme's wardrobe. Just, wow. From royal gowns to awesome battle gear: give me every outfit and I'll just wear it during the day to stride through my apartment. And I know, I know. It's not easy for a lot of you to find even just one good thing about those prequels, but come on; if you really REALLY had to say one thing. Wreck your brain, I'm sure you can come up with one tiny little thing.
I love John Williams' Star Wars score in general, but the piece that really gives me goosebumps every time I hear it is whenever the Force Theme comes up. It's present in Binary Sunset, but really reaches its climax in Leia's News/The Light of the Force. I once got to see this brought live at Star Wars in Concert and let me tell you: T E A R S . Let's return to the previous question for just a second, by the way, because Duel of the Fates from Episode I was pretty neat as well.
You can listen to it on Youtube, or under here through Spotify.
FAVOURITE STAR WARS MEMORY
Every premiere I went to was pretty cool, mainly because you just know the theatre is full of fans. There's dressed up people, whooping, applause, enthusiastic shouts and fist pumps. The atmosphere, in general, is basically the best.
IF YOU COULD GET/WANTED A STAR WARS TATTOO, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU GET?
This one's easy for me, and you already know what my answer is don't you? The Rebel Alliance symbol! Of which you can find an example right here:
One favourite quote? Nah. I'll just let these gifs speak for this one.
Okay, okay. That last one wasn't actually in there, but it's just too good.
FOR FUN: KILL, KISS, MARRY.
Kill: Kylo Ren. Because no matter what's in store for him, you can't just do what he did in The Force Awakens and get away with it. Right? Right.
Kiss: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Screw your little Jedi rules.
Marry: Poe Dameron. Because you don't split up Leia and Han. You just don't. And, well... Just look at him.
Q: So, how about you? Fill in the questionnaire in the comments! It would be awesome to hear about your own Star Wars stories and favourites.
Enjoy Star Wars Day!
