It appears temperatures are finally about to drop a bit starting tomorrow, and honestly? I could not be happier about that. Indian Summer has gone on long enough for this A/W fan, and I’m quite looking forward to lounging on my comfortable sofa, cinnamon bun style, or crawling into bed early while it’s pouring rain outside, happily spending the evenings mindlessly binging these Autumn/Winter favourites. Care to join?
CHARMED (1998-2006, 8 seasons)
I’m starting us off with an enormous dose of nostalgia with this one, and a pretty fitting series for counting down to Halloween. I mean, who else that grew up in the nineties had a Wiccan period? Because I sure did. It’s never actually left me entirely as I still have a soft spot for everything witch-y. Why I love Charmed so much? Well. Three awesome, powerful sisters, the cheesy music, spotting fun cameos,… What’s not to love? And let’s not forget Andy. Gosh, I loved Andy.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1997-2003, 7 seasons)
Let’s just continue with some nineties gold while we’re at it, shall we? I loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer even more than I loved Charmed at the time, and the reason is simple: S P I K E. It was slightly scarier as well, sometimes, and yet funnier too. And did I mention Spike? Bloody hell, I did. Not even sorry.
ONCE UPON A TIME (2011-2018, 7 seasons)
’Tis but a little step from the occult to full-on fairytales, and that’s exactly what Once Upon A Time is. I must admit it took me a while to get into this series again, and even after I did I still feel the first couple of seasons are so much better than the ones coming after them. Nevertheless, let’s just say I still find it difficult to resist that play next episode button every time I start watching.
ANNE WITH AN E (2017-…, 2 seasons)
I think it’s all about the scenery in this one that makes it one of my A/W favourites, but it’s such a heart-warming story, too. And who doesn’t like that warm, fuzzy feeling this time of year, right? I’m really glad Netflix is releasing a third season next year, but in the meantime I’ll gladly rewatch the previous two.
GILMORE GIRLS (2000-2007, 7 seasons)
If the opening credits in all those red tints doesn’t give you an Autumn feeling, the amount of coffee consumed by Lorelai and Rory each episode sure will.
OUTLANDER (2014-…, 3 seasons + 4th one coming soon!)
Remember that warm, fuzzy feeling caused by the amazing scenery and story I mentioned in the bit about Anne With an E? Well, this is just more of the same… Plus, well, a different sort of warm, fuzzy feeling. Caused by a certain Scotsman. Hello.
STRANGER THINGS (2016-…, 2 seasons)
A creepy storyline, spooky eighties synths and an ensemble of actors you could only call utterly brilliant? Stranger Things is definitely still one of the best series to watch or rewatch, especially around this time of year. Just… make sure all your lamps aren’t in need of changing before you start. Mine started flickering the first time I watched it with my sister, which was… Well, funny actually. BUT STILL.
BAND OF BROTHERS (2001, miniseries)
Not an Autumn and/or Winter go by without an annual Band of Brothers rewatch here. It just remains so beautifully captured, painfully confronting and - well - heartbreaking and yet heart-warming at times. A must-watch for everyone, actually, if only to remind ourselves never to go back in that direction.
