We are officially in the middle of a heatwave right now. Say 'aye!' if you can't take it any more either. It seems as though my brain has been taking a hit as well, because I can't quite seem to focus on this blog or writing in general whenever I have some time off from work. Main reason? It keeps pushing this dream forward. The dream of just floating in a swimming pool (if you're one of those people who were clever enough to fill up their pool before prohibition; I AM SO JEALOUS.) while, as an extra cooling factor, one of these films is playing. Check 'em out!
THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (2004)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: What I'd give to have that sea breeze blowing through my hair and not Cate Blanchett's... This Wes Anderson cult classic is the perfect view during the dog days of Summer, when you want to forget how sweaty you are and pretend you're part of the Belafonte's crew hunting down the notorious jaguar shark, instead.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "Son of a bitch, I'm sick of these dolphins."
ALTERNATIVE: Moonrise Kingdom. (Also by Wes Anderson, camp vibe and extremely pretty!)
THE WAY WAY BACK (2013)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Well, it takes place (for a large part, anyway) at a water park, so there you have it. Besides, it's a brilliant coming-of-age film AND it features the always delightful Sam Rockwell.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "Hey, listen up! I need a hero. I need a hero till the end of the night. He's got to be strong, and he's gotta be fast. And he's gotta be fresh from the fight."
THE PARENT TRAP (1998)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: I would not mind being in 'the evil stepmother's shoes right now. You know, when they leave her floating on a mattress in the middle of a lake? Sounds like heaven to me. Plus the camp setting, the whole nostalgia of it, and the Summer Holiday swap makes it an even more fitting watch on a hot Summer's day, don't you think?
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "Nothing!... Cruella."
WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER (2001)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Those watersport scenes with Paul Rudd are frickin' hilarious, ok?
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "You taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore."
FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (2008)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Well, it IS set in Hawaii, where you can go cool off at the beach whenever you want. And get a few surf lessons from (hello again!) Paul Rudd while you're at it. I'm definitely in, regardless of the fact that this is probably the funniest romcom ever.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: I can't even consider picking out a favourite quote, because the film is just full of brilliant little lines and moments. I'll just let Buzzfeed take over to prove it. ;)
DIRTY DANCING (1987)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Nuff. Said.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "I carried a watermelon." (I bet you didn't see that one coming)
STAND BY ME (1986)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: It takes place at the end of Summer, and I don't know about you but I'm currently not feeling too bad about counting down to that moment either... But it's REALLY on this list because it truly is a masterpiece every single one of you should see or see again, because it's just so damn brilliant a story and a great reminder that there is so much more to Stephen King than horror.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: Gordie: "Do you think I'm weird?" Chris: "Definitely." Gordie: "No man, seriously. Am I weird?" Chris: "Yeah, but so what? Everybody's weird."
FINDING NEMO (2003)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: OCEAN! Pretty Pixar ocean, at that.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: There are sooooo many, but "Your son Chico?" "Nemo." "Right, got it." always gets me.
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Oh, it doesn't even need one. Let's not pretend this isn't THE Summer movie of all Summer movies, because it totally is. ❤️
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "A hickey from Kenickie is like a Hallmark card. When you only care enough to send the very best."
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Well, just imagine how much hotter you'd feel if you were out on that court today. What a relief, huh? No, it's actually on the list because I absolutely adore this romantic film. The story and cast are just so utterly charming, so it's only natural this one resurfaces every year just around the time when the real deal's happening over in London, right?
THE GOONIES (1985)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: I imagine being down in a cool cave would be much better than where I am right now, that's all. I'll just take the booby traps with it, thank you... Especially since - well - that cave has a water slide leading to a super cool indoor lake that has a pirate ship full of treasure.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: "Hey, you guys!"
FREE WILLY (1993)
COOL DOWN FACTOR: Lots of swimming in this one, of course. And an ending that will give us, nineties kids, chillzzzzzz (I got tears already). Because, you know, regardless of Keiko's sad story behind the film (or ... because of it?), I still believe this is a heart-warming, lesson-packed film that's still at the top of the feel-good genre. I actually can't believe that fifteen years after its release, the whole captivity-for-amusement-thing is still, well... a thing. How can you support that stuff after that jump, people?
So there you have them: my 12 film favourites to battle the Summer heat! I have half a mind to just put on my bathing suit, go sit in the tub for lack of a real pool and just enjoy every single one of these!
Q: what are your favourite Summertime films?
