Today is International Women’s Day and I bet you’ve already picked up on that. Darn right, too, because the louder and prouder we are about this, the better to finally close that gap entirely, send those ridiculously high beauty standards to the past where they (never) belonged (either) and support all women across the world. Yes, including yourself. So, today of all the days of the year on which I appreciate and admire these women in particular, I want to acknowledge them. To show them that not only are they ‘enough’, they are so much more than that.
To my Mum. For raising me to be a kind, understanding and - yes - an emotional human being. For bringing me up with great music and lots of movies (a credit you do have to share with the Dad, of course). For telling me it’s alright not to follow those cliché paths in life. For sticking with me even after I took a gazillionth wrong turn. And for still believing I’ll get ‘there’ one day. You haven’t said as much, but I know you do and I love you so much for it.
To my Sister. For just about anything, really. For being my main girl. I’m not an easy secrets or thoughts spiller, but when I do, it’s always you at the other end. For your evilness (you know it’s true), because even though that’s meant to be a funny thing we always throw your way, it’s actually been pretty inspiring to me in tight spots.
To my Grandma. Who would absolutely hate me calling her Grandma because that sounds too old, even at 85. For the weekly sassiness. For being the epitome of a strong-willed, independent lady. For back-up-raising me. For spilling out the funniest oneliners and the best stories.
To my Aunt. For being as crazy geeky as us, sometimes, and staying that way until forever. For being my big sister when growing up. For sparking my creativity.
To the girl gang of friends. Both from school and from youth movement: for being there for everything including the bad moments. For being funny, brave, sometimes drunk, inventive, supportive and - especially - inspiring. What a stranger would perhaps take from this is that we hang out all the time, but the thing is we don’t. And that’s just it. Whether it’s been a week, a month, or longer: good times guaranteed, with a safe space for venting and good advice included. So, basically, thanks for not getting tired of me, haha!
To me. And of course this feels strange, while it actually shouldn’t, really… Self-Appreciation is an underrated thing, so here goes: for being strong and getting through every slump. For growing each day, slowly but steady. For not giving up. For sticking to your principles and trying to do what’s right, and for trying to inspire others to do the same more and more each day. Phew. I think we’re done.
To Princess Leia. For being your own rescuer.
To Carrie Fisher. For being so unapologetically yourself and inspiring me to do the same.
To Éowyn. For shutting that Witch King up with the best line in the history of lines.
To Jameela Jamil. For saying it. And repeating it. And being hilarious all the way through.
To Emma Watson. For keeping the awesomeness that is Hermione Granger going, just by being you and sticking up for your - and basically everyone’s - principles. You absolute badass.
To Patti Smith. For being well… God herself.
