I probably don't need to tell you how important it is to keep your body healthy. Paying attention to what you eat is one thing, but a workout, however short or intensive, is really something we should all make time for. Now, I am not that sporty, believe me. If I could lie on my couch all day just watching films or tv shows, I would definitely still swoon at the thought alone, but ever since I started running, I feel so much more energetic. There are still times when I lose the routine, however, and I always have to give myself that extra little push to start again AND to keep it up. Sound familiar? Then here's what I think helps!
FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE DOING
I, for one, loved running from the start, but I definitely know it's not for everyone. It's pretty obvious that motivating yourself for a workout you know you enjoy is much easier than keeping up a routine you don't, so that's that. Love dancing? Try a zumba class. Love yoga? Youtube is full of instructional videos to get you started. There's so much you can do, so I'm absolutely sure that there's something for everyone. Even if you're middle name is not Sporty Spice.
DON'T BE AFRAID OF WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK
You know, that moment where you start moving and you just... feel the blubber and you think everyone is watching you? I still struggle with that as well, but you know what? I'm going to go wild here and say that everyone feels that blubber (seriously, say 'aye' if you feel the blubber. Blubber is good. And it's cold outside, so you need the blubber, don't you? Okay, moving on), and that anyone who sees you working out - apart from some individuals that actually don't deserve one single bit of your attention - is more likely to respect the fact that you're working out, applauding it, or even think 'jeez, I should be doing that'. And that's if they even notice you. For example: people on the street are so used to runners that they don't even look up anymore, really. Besides, you should feel proud that you're doing something to keep yourself healthy, and not afraid to do so, right? Right.
REMEMBER HOW GOOD IT MAKES YOU FEEL
Every time I go without running for awhile and then start again, I always wonder how I could forget how great even a short run can make me feel. I always feel so energised and up for anything after a few kilometers, and the adrenaline while I'm at it feels amazing. Throw in a great running soundtrack and it'll probably have me smiling the whole way. I'm making it a point to remember that every time I don't feel like stepping out.
FIND THE RIGHT APP
An app that shows your progress can really motivate you to keep at it. I, myself, needed something more, and I definitely found it in the "Zombies, Run!" app. I swear by it, really, because it turns a regular run into a rescue or survival mission while you're occasionally thrown into a Zombie Apocalypse story line in between your own favourite songs (you can select a playlist of your own to go with the story). Think of it as being IN The Walking Dead, or seeing the next episode every time you go for a run. I just love it.
CONSIDER THOSE UPCOMING HOLIDAYS
I mean... Christmas is coming. New Year's is coming. Think about all the delicious food you'll get to enjoy without having to feel guilty because you'll compensate it with a workout. I'm not saying it will burn away ALL the holiday indulgences, but hey. It WILL make you feel better, believe me.
