It appears temperatures are finally about to drop a bit starting tomorrow, and honestly? I could not be happier about that. Indian Summer has gone on long enough for this A/W fan, and I’m quite looking forward to lounging on my comfortable sofa, cinnamon bun style, or crawling into bed early while it’s pouring rain outside, happily spending the evenings mindlessly binging these Autumn/Winter favourites. Whereas I wrote a post about the Autumn and mostly Winter months bringing a bit more of those lonely feelings with them for this singleton, I wanted to devote another one to everything that makes up for that. Just about everything else, if you ask me, but I understand a lot of you don't really feel the same way. Well... Here's me trying to convince you that Winter is quite perfect in its own way. Here goes!
IT'S THE ULTIMATE HOMEBODY EXCUSE
Don't really feel like going out or being social? Well, if the cold and wet weather isn't a good enough excuse then I don't know what is. Winter is the time where you can throw yourself into your sofa for the entire evening, without so much as an inkling of guilt, really. It's all the more enjoyable when you know it's freezing and pitch black outside, and you're just all warm and cosy inside surrounded by a dozen candles, isn't it? Cuddle up with a book or your favourite tv series and you'll wish it'd be Winter just a tad bit longer.
LOUNGE WEAR AND OVERSIZED SWEATERS
Comfy times, those cold days, aren't they? I've been walking around the house in my too big (and that's an understatement) The Empire Strikes Back sweater all day and have never felt better about myself, and last Sunday had me lounging in my PJs all day (I literally haven't done that in a year) while watching Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life . And, man, it was heaven.
Don't judge, but what I absolutely love doing in Winter is hanging up food for the birds and just watch those little feathery guys flock to it. It took them quite a while this year, but they've finally arrived and are as cute as ever. If you're lucky (and VERY patient) you might even catch a couple of them on camera or spot a couple of rarities.
FAIRY LIGHTS EVERYWHERE
In windows, on every lamp post in the street, at home... It just adds something magical to this season and I wouldn't miss it for the world, really. Probably the biggest reason why this is my favourite time of year!
Ah, the food, the people, the presents, the atmosphere. Christmas is definitely my favourite holiday, and I don't think I'm alone in this. I've basically been looking forward to it ever since Halloween passed, actually. And I'm not even sorry about it.
COMFORT FOOD AND DRINKS
Mulled wine at the local Christmas market, hot chocolate with little marshmallows in it, schnapps at the bonfire, ice cold milk with chocolate chip cookies, the gorgeous Christmas Cocktail my aunt surprises us with at the start of the party every year, delicious apple cider,... Need I go on?
I don't know about you, but whenever this time of year comes along, we turn into even larger BBC junkies than we already are. A dozen Christmas Specials, great classic (Holiday) films and a new Sherlock series are among the things I'm looking forward to the most. And that's just on TV...
FILM & AWARD SEASON
Because stepping out to the local theatre is definitely on the list, as well. There are a couple of great releases planned in the coming months (Rogue One, for starters!) of which I'll make a list very soon, and Award Season is coming up as well. This is the time to watch as many potential winners as you can, just so you can celebrate (or, you know, boo) when they are awarded.
NATURE AT ITS BEST
Yes, yes, yes. Nights are longer, days are shorter and it gets a lot of people down. But have you noticed something else about those sunrises and sunsets despite all that? They are absolutely breathtaking and the colour palette is a lot more impressive because the air is so crisp in Autumn and Winter. And, hey, you don't have to get up at an ungodly hour or wait till it's late to enjoy the absolutely mind-blowing sky, either. ;-)
NEW YEAR'S EVE
Always over in a flash, isn't it? One moment you're eating a delicious meal (again with the food!) with your friends and/or family, the next you're opening up presents, hurrying out of the door to the nearest party and before you know it; January in the new year. It's all a bit of an anti-climax, I suppose, but I, for one, am totally ready to wave 2016 goodbye. Everyone who thinks this was sort of a crappy year, say "aye"!
What about you, what do you love most about Winter?
